Willem Jaron, "Golf"
As the son of a builder and an artist, and grandson of an architect, quite possibly, pre-determined my early and continued interest in the why, how, and what of everyday life.
Presently, I don’t desire to become an aspect of my personal history, I see myself combining their interests to guide me toward mine. Since childhood, I have been an informal/inquisitive inventor, fascinated by how/why things are made. Wanting to understand why the sky is blue and the grass is green.
Mostly, see me as a problem solver. When I was 5yrs old, I asked Santa for a vacuum.. I was fascinated by anything motorized. I would run around the house with my DirtDevil, simultaneously making a mess and cleaning it! When I was 9yrs old, I asked for a DYSON, wanting to experience the upgraded motor capabilities. While my mother thought it strange that a child would ask for such a thing, she recognized my budding interest in machinery and electronics and Santa fulfilled my wish.
My favorite tv show is/was 'How it’s Made?' When I was 7yrs old, I started to envision creating my own vacuum. I spent days and nights pondering what it would look like, which materials I could use to make it. I dug through the recycling bins for parts, gathered various boxes, cans, and nick-nacks. I cut scraps of tape from my dad's office, disassembled my mother's old clothing to use the buttons, and cleaned out milk bottles. I was certain these rejected household items would be exactly what I needed to make my vision come to life.
My mother supported my creative efforts, even documenting my progress. That summer, my invention grew to be larger than a vacuum, eventually outgrowing my bedroom. We moved it outside by the pool. With the water's inspiration, I altered my plan and began building a personal watercraft. Big lesson learned, materials matter! Tape, cardboard boxes, and plastic buttons don't float.
My creative, adventurous, and, at times, obsessive personality has helped me solve other problems. When I was 8yrs old, I got my first golf cart I continue to use engineering principles to keep the electric motor running. When I was 11yrs old, my best friend and I built our first treehouse, complete with a handmade zipline.
The projects, I dreamed up became more extensive and complex. In high school, I attended an engineering program. I read books about Henry Ford and became fascinated by his way of seeing the world. Learning that my passions were not just childhood hobbies I recognize they could be applied to real-life projects and create my lifetime career.
I understand that the educational road ahead is intense and demanding. Being a dreamer, I have been, occasionally, frustrated with not having all the answers when I want them. I slowly fell behind in my school work and golf activities during high school, as I found I did not have enough time to focus on everything equally. I worked hard to overcome my issues with time management. My analytic brain has made me a better golfer and student, a National Honors Society member, the Student-Athlete award winner, and my golf team go all the way to the State Championship.
Engineering class has taught me why the sky is blue, and golf has shown me why the grass is green.
The inventors, designers, and engineers at DYSON created a vacuum that I fell in love with as a child, not realizing that those jobs are for those like me: dreamers and problem solvers. Combining problem-solving and engineering skills with the physics of golf has shown me that the blue sky is not the limit.
Perhaps I can create a vacuum that can suck up all the world's water and air pollution? Or design the perfectly engineered recycled watercraft to float us toward a better tomorrow.
WILLEM M. JARON
I am a Senior in high school, 4-year Varsity Golf Letterman, 4.26 GPA student; I intend to continue playing golf in college at a highly selective university. For me, golf is more than a game, from the mechanics of a swing to course designs.
I am working to turn ideas into reality by combining my passion for the game with a career in the world of golf. I can see myself playing on tour just as much as I can see myself, designing, engineering, and building courses. To attain my goals of being the best player I can be, I spend hours practicing, training, evaluating my swing, and playing in tournaments.
I attend the Engineering Academy at Naples High School, where I have earned college credits & 3-D modeling certification in Autodesk Revit and Inventor. I have worked at my local golf club (Windstar on Naples Bay) since I turned 16. This summer, I plan to intern with a golf course landscape architect/engineer. At the same time, I was playing in as many tournaments as possible.
My parents have taught me that combining your passion/hobby with your career leads to success and lifelong happiness.
I realize that there are many students with the same goals and skills; the one thing that uniquely sets me apart is that I have grown up in a town with year-round golf and many golf pros.
I have been fortunate to volunteer at many PGA Tour golf events and talk with people living my dream.
They have taught me that success is more than just technical skills and winning. They have taught me that honesty and leadership are what make you rise to another level.
STRENGTHS:
ACTIVITIES & HOBBIES:
INTERESTS:
Golfing: I enjoy being outside, learning about the game, and overcoming the challenges of the course.
As someone very interested in the design and engineering of the courses, I get lost in the unique experience of each. The impossibility of mastering the game keeps me excited to become the best player I can be.
Share a time when you faced a challenge, obstacle, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? Meat! My mother is a vegetarian; I am not. While going through a tremendous growth spurt over the past two years, cooking has become one of my hobbies. I like learning new recipes to cook steak and chicken! Occasionally, I cook for the whole family! I am 6' 2" tall now...
How are you giving back to the community, and how will you give back in the future? (i.e., in high school, college, etc.)
Freshman, Sophomore & Junior Year: Twice a week after school, I help the head coach during practices and tournaments.
For the past three years, I volunteered as a standard-bearer at the Chubb Classic & QBE Shootout on the PGA Tour
The First Tee Program:
I started the program in 4th Grade, I have learned many things. I use the STAR acronym often:
I have used STAR many times in school, mostly while taking tests. STAR was useful recently; during a Chemistry test, I STOPped and thought/THINK about the question, ANTICIPATED the answer. RESPONDED to the context clues to determine the answer to the question, which helped me get an A! Because of the First Tee program, I have had golf as a constant in my life. Each year I have met many people in the local golf community and learned about the Nine Core Values. These values have allowed me to continue to grow my golf game and me as an individual. If you ask my mom, I dress better than any of my friends. By wearing golf outfits most of the time, she loves that I wear a collared shirt and tuck it in with a belt!
What is your mantra, and explain why? There are three that I use often:
Two my mother always says:
Meaning, try your best always to keep going even if you fail. Always be respectful of other people's time. Mostly, you should try your best to be early for everything you do. This allows you to be able to set yourself up for success without rushing.
